Now here's something you don't see every day: a basketball player loses his shoe, but rather than stop to put it back on, he holds it in his hand and tries blocking a shot with it.
It happened Wednesday in the Phillipines Basketball Association, as Barako Bull forward Rico Maierhofer's shoe came off on the offensive end during a driving layup. Maierhofer found his shoe, picked it up, hustled back on defense, then tried swatting a layup attempt with his shoe.
Maierhofer did manage to redirect his opponent into a bad pass which led to a turnover. Maierhofer was not penalized for the play, but PBA operations manager Rickie Santos said the referees should have called a technical foul on Maierhofer. Common sense would seem to dictate that using a "foreign object" in such a manner would be illegal.
On Friday, Maierhofer is scheduled to appear before the PBA league office on Friday to explain his side of the story.
