Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer pitched a no-hitter Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, falling just short of pitching a perfect game as he hit Pirates pinch-hitter Jose Tabata with two outs in the top of the ninth inning.
Scherzer hit Tabata in the elbow, but Tabata didn't exactly make an effort to avoid the pitch, and some might say he actually leaned into it. Take a look at the video and decide for yourself:
The umpires had the authority to rule that Tabata let himself get hit on purpose, but decided against it. Sports Illustrated's Peter King felt that the umpires should have made that call:
A lot of fans felt the same way, but MLB pitcher Brandon McCarthy sided with Tabata:

Ump should have called Tabata for purposely getting hit. Bullcrap way to spoil the perfecto.

looked like a totally normal reaction from a hitter to an inside breaking ball- why the hate?
