San Diego Padres left fielder Justin Upton knocked teammate Yadier Alonso out of Saturday night's game in Colorado when he accidentally threw a helmet into his face.
With one out in the top of the eighth and the Padres down 5-4, Upton hit a double to make himself the tying run. However, Upton got caught in a rundown when he tried to steal third, squandering a key scoring opportunity. Clearly frustrated as he returned to the dugout, Upton went to slam his batting helmet onto the ground. Somehow, the helmet didn't come off his hand until it was across his body, sending it flying backwards behind him towards a group of players at the dugout railing. Yadier Alonso was the unlucky victim, as he went down when the helmet hit him in the face.
Naturally, Alonso was not happy, and when he got up, he began to throw things, namely a cooler and a bucket of bubble gum. Talk about unintended consequences.
In the end, Alonso was taken out of the game and checked out by Padres medical staff. The Padres rallied for three runs in the ninth to beat the Rockies 7-5. After the game, Upton called the incident a "big mistake".
