Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Cliff Pennington made MLB history Tuesday, becoming the first true position player ever to pitch in a playoff game.
Pennington was called upon in the ninth inning of ALCS Game 4 with two outs and runners on first and second as the Blue Jays tried to save their bullpen while being blown out by the Royals 12-2.
Pennington showed some promise with his first pitch, which was a strike that registered at 91 miles per hour on the radar gun. However, Pennington gave up two consecutive singles that led to two runs for the Royals before finally getting a foul popup for the final out of the inning.
Pennington did get a nice hand from the fans at the Rogers Centre, who really needed something to cheer about as their team faces a 3-1 deficit to the Royals in the series.
