Virginia Tech Hokies defensive end Dadi Nicolas temporarily lost his head and smacked a referee's arm while arguing against a penalty on a teammate to the crowd during the third quarter of Saturday's ACC football game against North Carolina.
It happened with 9:31 remaining in the third quarter as UNC held a 7-3 lead. The Tarheels had 3rd and 11 on the VT 39 yard line when the Hokies were called for defensive offsides. As the head referee was announcing the penalty to the crowd, Nicolas
Not surprisingly, Nicolas was flagged with a well-deserved unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and even the hometown Virginia Tech fans were shocked and embarrassed. Amazingly, Nicolas briefly paused and looked at the referee in shock that he was called for a penalty.
Nicolas has to know that behavior is not acceptable, and it was completely uncalled for. As a player, you can't touch a referee under any circumstances. You just can't do it.
The penalty handed North Carolina a first down, and the Tarheels ended the drive with a field goal.
