New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist triggered a near riot in Madison Square Garden Tuesday night as fans fought over a stick that he tossed into the stands.
Lundqvist was the Number 1 star of the game with 33 saves in a 3-0 victory over Carolina. After the game, Lundqvist tried to reward a lucky fan by giving away his game stick. That was a big mistake, as multiple fans got their hands on the stick at the same time, and none of them would let go.
We counted at least eight fans pulling at Lundqvist's stick. One fan was nearly choked as he pulled the stick towards his chest while another fan in the row behind him tried to pull the stick up and out of his hands.
In the end, there was no way to determine the "rightful owner", so no one got to take home the stick. Security had to be called in to handle the situation, and they collected Lundqvist's stick and brought it back to the locker room. So much for Lundqvist's attempt at generosity.
