Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Darren Prout sucker punched Tampa Bay Lightning right winger Nikiti Kucherov during a second period scrum during Sunday's game at Nationwide Arena.
It all started as goaltender Ben Bishop went behind his net to clear the puck and had his legs taken out by Nick Foligno. Naturally Bishop's teammates came to his defense and came after Foligno, leading to some pushing and shoving behind the Lightning net. Kucherov was grabbing Foligno from behind when Prout skated in from the side and delivered a punch to the side of Kucherov's head.
Here's another angle from behind the glass which more clearly shows the sucker punch by Prout:
Prout received two minutes for roughing and a 10 minute game misconduct, and could possibly receive additional discipline from the league office once the play is reviewed further. Foligno received two minutes for the initial trip that started the scrum and Kucherov received two minutes for roughing.
In the end, the Lightning got the last laugh, beating the Blue Jackets 4-0.
