Carolina Hurricanes center Jordan Staal speared Pittsburgh Penguins right winger Bryan Rust in the groin as they mixed it up during the second period of Thursday night's NHL game at the CONSOL Energy Center.
Staal started the scrum by cross-checking Rust in the back without any provocation. Rust retailiated by shoving Staal with his stick as he tried to skate away. That's when Staal delivered the low blow to Rust's private parts.
It all happened right in front of a linesman, so both players were sent to the penalty box. Rust received two minutes for cross-checking, and Staal received two minutes for slashing.
In the end, Rust and the Penguins got the last laugh as they came away with the 4-2 victory they needed to help them with their playoff push.
