Edmonton Oilers defenseman Mark Fayne accidentally hit a linesman in the head with a puck during the third period of Friday night's game against Columbus.
The play raised some eyebrows, considering that Fayne had nothing but open ice in front of him and could have easily cleared the puck down the middle of the ice. Instead, he inexplicably tried to play the puck along the boards, right where linesman Darren Gibbs was standing. Naturally, Gibbs had no reason to think the puck was coming his way, so he had no chance to dodge the puck.
We have no reason to think this was anything more than an accident, but after recent incidents, we can never be too sure.
The play summed up the performance of the Oilers for the evening, as they lost to the Blue Jackets 6-3.
