Princeton Tigers men's lacrosse coach Chris Bates was fired Wednesday after an incident over the weekend where he elbowed an opposing player during a game.
It happened in the opening minute of the third quarter Saturday's Ivy league Match against Brown. Brown senior midfielder John Yozzo-Scaperrotta had just fallen in front of the Tigers bench after colliding with Princeton's Austin deButts. Brown called for a substitute, and Yozzo-Scaperrotta was jogging towards the sideline when Bates inexplicably bumped him in the arm with his elbow.

Bates was placed on administrative leave Monday pending review by the university. At the time, Bates declined to comment, although he told the New York Daily News via email that "there's more context to the story than what appears in a (5-second) clip."
Matt Madalon will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
