Miami Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto was stripped of a home run after passing his teammate on the basepath as he rounded first base during Monday night's game against Milwaukee.
It happened in the bottom of the second inning after Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna reached first base on a single. Realmuto hit a deep fly ball to left-center field over the outfield wall for what should have been a home run and would have given the Marlins a 2-0 lead. However, Ozuna apparently thought the ball was going to be caught, so he ran back to first base. Realmuto slowed down as he rounding first base to make sure the ball was over the wall, but by that time, he had passed Ozuna.
After both runners crossed home plate, the umpires went to the replay and confirmed that Realmuto passed Ozuna on the basepath. Realmuto was called out, but was given credit for an RBI single on the play as Ozuna was allowed to score, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead.
That's not something you expect to see on the major league level, but sometimes even the pros forget the rules. One thing's for sure: we'll bet that Realmuto will never make that mistake again. Fortunately, he didn't cost his team as the Marlins beat the Brewers 4-1.
