Benches cleared in the fifth inning of Wednesday night's Subway Series game in the Bronx as New York Mets pitcher Steven Matz hit New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira in the lower leg with a pitch.
Teixeira felt it was intentional, considering that he hit a three-run homer in the second inning that gave the Yankees a lead in the game. Teixeira did not approach the mound, but had some angry words for Mats that prompted both benches to empty. Fortunately, the situation did not escalate and clearer heads prevailed.
Teixeira was clearly in the heads of the Mets pitchers all night, as he reached base in all four of his at-bats, including two walks. The Yankees beat the Mets 9-5.
