Buffalo Sabres left winger William Carrier may be facing a suspension after the league reviews his illegal check to the head of Boston Bruins center David Backes during the first period of Thursday night's NHL game at the KeyBank Center.
Backes had just dumped the puck into the Sabres zone from the red line when he was crushed from behind on the backcheck by Carrier.
Backes was down on the ice for a while and needed help getting to the dressing room. He did not return to the game.
Carrier was given two minutes in the penalty box for the illegal check. As soon as he was done serving his time in the box, Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid went right after him.
Carrier ended up back in the box with a five minute major. McQuaid received a five minute major for fighting, a ten minute game misconduct and a two minute minor for instigating the fight.
The Bruins got the last laugh as they beat the Sabres 4-2.
