A bizarre exchange unfolded in Tampa Bay on Monday as the Lightning hosted the Maple Leafs when NHL referee Gord Dwyer threw a glove at the Lightning bench.
It happened in the middle of the third period and the sequence began when Lightning center Cedric Paquette was hit in the face by a high stick. Paquette was frustrated that no penalty was called, so he threw his glove at Dwyer and yelled at him on his way to the bench. Dwyer picked up the glove a few seconds later, and as he skated by the Lightning bench, he chucked the glove down in front of Paquette.
Naturally, Paquette was a bit angry, along with teammate Ryan Callahan, who had a few choice words for Dwyer.
After things calmed down a bit, Dwyer went over to the Lightning bench to talk things over with head coach Jon Cooper. Give him credit for trying to fix things, but two wrongs don't make a right here. Dwyer has to keep his cool in that situation.
The Lightning beat the Maple Leafs 4-3 in a shootout.
