Niklas Sule scores painful own goal with his face (Video)

Bayern Munich defenseman Niklas Sule scored a painful own goal (in more ways than one) during Saturday's Bundesliga match against Augsburg.

Sule was the victim of unfortunate circumstance during the 18th minute of the match as he was running back to help stop Augsburg forward Sergio Cordova on a breakaway opportunity. Bayern Munich goaltender Sven Ulreich came out from the net to stop the shot by Cordova from about 18 yards out. Unfortunately, Ulreich's clearance attempt ricocheted off Sule's face into the open net.

Sule went down upon initial impact, but got back up and seemed to be OK.

We don't blame Sule for this one, as the goal was set in motion when fellow Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng held possession of the ball for a second too long, having it stolen by Cordova and leading to the breakaway. When Ulreich tried to clear, Sule had no chance to react to get out of the way.

In the end, however, this was all water under the bridge, as this was the only goal to be scored for Augsburg. Bayern Munich regrouped to win the game convincingly 4-1 and clinched their sixth consecutive Bundesliga title. This should make it a lot easier for Sule to put this one behind him.
