Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty was furious after the officials failed to call a penalty on San Jose Sharks right winger Timo Meier for slashing him during the second period of Friday night's NHL game at the Staples Center. However, taking a closer look, Doughty was fortunate that he was not called for embellishment.
It happened with just under 15 minutes left in the second period. The incident started with Doughty grabbing Meier and throwing him against the boards in front of the Kings bench. As Doughty skated away to follow the puck down to the Kings end, Meier hit him in the left knee with his stick.
It didn't seem like much, but Doughty went down to the ice, curled up in a ball and rolled over a few times, similar to that infamous Neymar flop during the 2018 World Cup.
Since the incident happened behind the play, the referees didn't see it, so no penalty was called on Meier. Doughty threw a bit of a tantrum with the officials while being tended to by a trainer before being taken off the ice and into the dressing room. Doughty returned to the game late in the second period.
In our opinion, although it technically was a slash by Meier, Doughty seemed to play it up a bit too much. We thought hockey players were tougher than that.
In the end, the Sharks beat the Kings 3-2 in overtime.
