Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jared Hughes sprinted all the way to the pitchers mound from the right field bullpen during Wednesday night's game in Boston.
The Phillies called for Hughes in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and the bases loaded with the Red Sox looking to extend their 2-0 lead. When the bullpen doors opened, Hughes darted out and raced all the way to the infield, when he finally slowed down a bit because he was out of breath.
By our estimate, Hughes made it from the bullpen to the mound in about 15 seconds. If you figure that distance to be about 100 yards, give or take, that's no joke.
How did Hughes do? Well, he was able to stop the Red Sox rally with a groundout to end the fourth inning, then kept the Red Sox off the board in the fifth before being replaced in the sixth. In the meantime, the Phillies came from behind to take the lead in the fifth and held on for a 5-2 win over the Red Sox, which earned Hughes the win. Therefore, if this approach works for him, maybe Hughes has to stick with it for now.
