Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin wore a number 24 jersey during warmups prior to Wednesday night's game against Nashville to honor Kobe Bryant, the basketball legend who died tragically this past Sunday in a helicopter crash with his daughter Gianna and seven others.
Ovechkin met Bryant during a trip to Los Angeles in 2016 prior to Bryant's retirement from the NBA. Bryant gave Ovechkin a pair of autographed sneakers and an autographed Lakers jersey that said "To Alex - one of the all time greats".
Ovechkin plans to sign the number 24 Capitals jersey and auction it off, with the proceeds going to Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Foundation.
