Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty was cleared of assault charges by the Philadelphia police, inspiring more jokes on the late night talk show circuit.
Stephen Colbert referenced the story during his "Meanwhile..." segment on Wednesday night. The punchline: "This is truly historic. It is the first Philadelphia sports fan to be acquitted of assault."
Conan O'Brien dedicated a whole segment to the story on Tuesday night's episode of Conan. In the segment, a fake "Gritty" was relieved to be cleared of the charges, but then proceeded to beat up a stage manager and a teenage boy, raising the question of whether he had truly learned his lesson.
