Hunter Pence loses fly ball, blows Johnny Cueto's no-hit bid

Hunter Pence loses fly ball in the lights Giants vs Dodgers 8/8/2020

San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence lost a fly ball in the lights during Saturday night's game in Los Angeles against the division rival Dodgers.

It happened in the bottom of the sixth with no outs and the Giants holding a 5-0 lead. Giants starter Johnny Cueto had given up no hits (with only one base runner) to that point. Dodgers batter Enrique Hernandez hit the 2-1 pitch into left field in what appeared to be an easy out. Unfortunately, Pence lost the ball in the lights almost immediately, and the ball landed nearly 30 feet behind him.

Mike Yastrzemski chased down the ball from center field. Hernandez took advantage of the misplay, ending up on third base as he was credited with a triple. The play led to a four-run rally for the Dodgers which knocked Cueto out of the game.

Naturally, Pence felt awful not only for losing the fly ball, but blowing Cueto's chance at a no-hitter. Fortunately, the Giants were able to hold on to the 5-4 victory.
