New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole had an embarrassing moment early in Thursday's Opening Day game against Toronto when he lost track of the outs while on the mound.

It happened in the top of the second inning as Cole had runners on first and second with one out after giving up three singles and a run in the inning. On a 3-2 pitch, Cole got Blue Jays batter Randal Grichuk to swing and miss on a slider low and outside for strike three. Cole began to walk towards the Yankees dugout, but quickly realized that the strikeout was only the second out of the inning.
Cole made his way back to the mound and struck out the next batter for the third out to end the inning. He gave up two runs on 5 hits with 8 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings, but left the game with the score tied at 2-2 so did not get a decision. The Yankees lost to the Blue Jays 3-2 in 10 innings.
