Miguel Cabrera hits HR, slides into second base vs. Indians

Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was involved in a funny moment during Thursday's Opening Day game against Cleveland when he slid into second base after hitting a home run.

It happened in the bottom of the first with two outs and a runner on first in a scoreless game. With the count at 1-1, Cabrera hit a 92 mph fastball off Indians pitcher Shane Bieber into the right field seats. However, given that the game was being played in the middle of a snowstorm and the ball bounced off the railing above the fence and back onto the field, Cabrera slid into second base thinking he only had a double.

It was pretty funny to see, but understandable given the circumstances. The second base umpire notified Cabrera that he had in fact hit a homer, and Cabrera continued jogging the bases until he reached home plate to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Cabrera gets credit for the first home run of the 2021 MLB season, which happened to be the 350th homer of Cabrera's career.

It was Cabrera's only hit of the game as he finished 1-for-4 as the Tigers beat the Indians 3-2.
