Raccoon interrupts Philadelphia-NYCFC MLS match (Video)

Security chases raccoon, NYCFC vs. Philadelphia Union, 5/14/2024

Wednesday night's MLS match between the Philadelphia Union and visiting NYCFC was interrupted for several minutes by a racoon that found its way onto the field and refused to leave.

It happened about 20 minutes into the first half with NYCFC leading 1-0. The racoon ran from one end of the field to the other before security personnel began chasing it with plastic garbage cans. At that point, the raccoon ran back across the field again, with security personnel afraid of getting to close, likely out of fear of getting bitten and contracting rabies. Meanwhile, players stood still and watch the scene play out as fans seemed to enjoy the spontaneous entertainment.

The raccoon managed to run ragged for about two full minutes before security managed to contain it with one of the garbage cans. Play resumed at about the 25 minute mark.

We have seen many incidents of animals interrupting sporting events over the years, but this may be the longest interruption we have seen so far. The Union should look into calling wildlife control to give Subaru Park a full inspection after this.
