Willi Castro jogs towards dugout after catching fly ball with one out (Video)

Willi Castro hangs head after losing track of outs, Yankees vs. Twins, 5/15/2024

Minnesota Twins center fielder Willi Castro found himself in an embarrassing situation when he lost track of the number of outs during Wednesday night's game against the New York Yankees.

It happened in the top of the second with one out as the Yankees had the bases loaded with a 1-0 lead. Yankees batter Anthony Volpe hit a line drive to center field. Castro ran in to make the catch and began jogging to the dugout, thinking the inning was over. He was sadly mistaken, however, as Gleyber Torres began sprinting towards home from third base. Castro threw home, but it was way too late and his throw was cut off by pitcher Pablo Lopez.

Torres scored easily to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Volpe was credited with an RBI on what amounted to a sacrifice fly on what was clearly a mental error by Castro. Castro hung his head as he walked back to his spot in center field after the misplay.

You would think that losing track of outs is something that doesn't happen at the major league level, but it happens more frequently than you might expect. Hopefully Castro has learned his lesson.

The Yankees beat the Twins 4-0, so it cannot be said that Castro's mistake decided the game. You can't win if you don't score.
