Yankees-White Sox interrupted by bird on infield (Video)

Bird on Yankee Stadium infield, White Sox vs. Yankees, 5/19/2024

Sunday's MLB game in the Bronx between the New York Yankees and visiting Chicago White Sox was temporarily interrupted by a bird that planted itself on the infield and refused to leave.

It happened in the bottom of the fifth inning with no one on and nobody out as the Yankees held a 5-2 lead. With the count 1-1 on leadoff batter Juan Soto, White Sox pitcher Tim Hill and first baseman Andrew Vaughn noticed a bird had perched itself on the first base side of the infield grass between the pitcher's mound and the foul line. Surprisingly, the bird did not move as they walked over to it. Vaughn tried to scoop up the bird, but it flew a few feet away before planting itself down on the grass again.

It was apparent that the bird did not have enough strength to fly, but it was able to briefly avoid being captured by a stadium security guard trying to catch it with his cap. Eventually, however, the security guard managed to trap it on the ground, then picked up the bird and carried it off the field.

We have seen animals interrupt sporting events quite frequently over the years, including a recent incident with a raccoon. In this case, the bird clearly needed some assistance getting off the field as it seemed to be injured in some way. We hope that the bird is OK.

Soto worked a walk, and Aaron Judge followed it up with a home run to increase their lead to 7-2, which would become the final score of the game. The Yankees have now won seven games in a row and have a two-game lead in the American League East.
