Pete Alonso strikes out on pitch clock violation, Mets vs. Nationals, 6/3/2024
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso struck out after getting called for a pitch clock violation for strike three during Monday night's game in Washington, D.C.

It happened in the top of the eighth inning with one out and nobody on as the Mets led the Nationals 8-5. Alonso swung and missed at the fist pitch of his at-bat, then hit a foul ball for strike two. Based on the video, Alonso was not engaged with the pitcher at the eight second mark on the pitch clock, so home plate umpire Carlos Torres called the violation on Alonso, resulting in the second out of the inning.

Alonso let an f-bomb fly on the way to the dugout. Looked like he wanted to throw his bat, but held himself back from a full-fledged temper tantrum.

Alonso was 0-for-5 from the plate, including two strikeouts, so he had reason to be frustrated. Not only that, but the Mets as a team have been in the middle of a terrible stretch of baseball, having gone 6-17 before Monday night's game. Fortunately, the Mets were able to hang on for an 8-7 victory.
