San Francisco Giants shortstop Brett Wisely missed out on a hit and at least one RBI due to some bad luck during Friday night's game in Colorado.
It happened in the top of the fourth with runners on first and second and one out as the Giants were looking to continue a rally and extend their 3-0 lead. On the first pitch of his at-bat, Wisely hit a splitter right down the first base line in what looked to be an extra base hit. First base umpire Chris Conroy moved into fair territory in an attempt to move out of the way as the ball appeared it would head into foul territory after it passed the bag. Unfortunately, the ball hit the bag and redirected into fair territory, then hit Conroy himself and bounced right to first baseman Michael Toglia, who was able to sprint and beat Wisely to the bag with a last-second slide for the out.

Like we said, just terrible luck. Can't necessarily fault Conroy on this, as he could not account for the last-second change in direction by the ball, but it doesn't seem fair to Wisely or the Giants. In all likelihood, that would have been at least a double and one or two runs would have scored. Instead, the Giants ended up with two outs and runners on second and third, with the next batter striking out to end the inning.
We have seen umpires get caught in the middle of a play before, and they certainly don't do it intentionally, but it's a shame when it ends up having a big impact on a game.
The Giants were unable to score for the rest of the game, and the Rockies were able to come back later in the game to win 7-3.
