Young MEts fan tosses Mark Vientos HR ball back, Twins vs. Mets, 7/31/2024

A home run ball hit by New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos was thrown back on the field by a young hometown fan during Wednesday's game at Citi Field against Minnesota.

It happened in the bottom of the second inning with a man on first and nobody out as the Twins held an early 1-0 lead. Vientos hit a home run to deep right field to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. A dad in the stands ended up with the ball and gave it to his son to keep. The boy apparently misunderstood, however, as he happily tossed the ball back onto the field. The dad's terrified face at that moment says it all:

This isn't the first time we have seen a young MLB fan throw a ball back, and we would guess won't be the last. They probably get confused when they see fans on TV throw back home run balls hit by the visiting team. He didn't realize how lucky he was. Hopefully he has learned his lesson, and we hope the Mets were able to get another ball to him.

As for the game, the Mets fell to the Twins 8-3.
