Alex Bregman ejected for criticizing umpire, Royals vs. Astros, 8/29/2024

Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman was ejected from Thursday night's game against Kansas City for making some comments to the home plate umpire after striking out.

It happened in the bottom of the fourth inning with one out and nobody on as the game was still scoreless. Royals starter Brady Singer threw a 92 mph sinker that Bregman did not swing at. The pitch was low, but home plate umpire Alex Tosi called it a strike. Bregman stared at Tosi in disbelief and said "What? Come on now." as he shook his head in disbelief.

Bregman took the next pitch, which was right down the middle for strike two, and the next pitch, which was borderline on the outside part of the strike zone, but Tosi rang up Bregman with a strike three call. Bregman walked in front of Tosi on his way to the dugout and made a comment that only Tosi could hear, most likely complaining about that first pitch that was low. Tosi apparently did not like what he said and ejected Bregman.

We don't blame Bregman for being upset with the call on that first pitch, which was clearly low. We don't know what was said by Bregman that got him tossed, but Tosi may have been a bit too sensitive here. It's not as if Bregman was trying to show him up. Bregman didn't slam his helmet down and make a big stink out of it. Doesn't seem right.

Bregman finished his night 0-for-2, but the Astros beat the Royals 6-3.
