American pro golfer Sam Burns snapped his driver by slamming it into the ground after a bad tee shot during Saturday's third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship tournament in Memphis.
It happened on the tee at the 9th hole with Burns tied for second place overall at 12-under, just two shots behind tournament leader Hideki Matsuyama. Burns was trying to drive the ball a bit left, but he shanked it way left into the trees on the side of the course. Burns knew it immediately and took out his anger with a tomahawk slam of his driver. The head of the driver snapped off the shaft, so there was no way he was going to be able to use it again.
We have seen plenty of pro golfers snap their drivers on the course before as golf can be a frustrating game.
Burns shot a double bogey on the 9th hole and finished a disappointing round at even par. However, he is still tied for fourth overall at 10-under with top-ranked Scottie Scheffler. Although tournament leader Hideki Matsuyama has increased his lead to five shots, which could be insurmountable, Burns is in line to earn a nice paycheck, so hopefully he can put things in perspective as he heads into Sunday's final round.
