Matt Chapman hits inside-the-park HR, Giants vs. D-backs, 9/23/2024

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman hit an inside-the-park home run during Monday night's game in Arizona.

It happened in the top of the third with two outs and a man on third with the game tied at 1-1. On the 1-2 pitch, Chapman hit a drive over 400 feet to deep center field. D-backs outfielder Jake McCarthy tried to time his jump to catch the ball against the wall. However, the ball went over his outstretched arm and bounced off the wall towards right-center field as McCarthy crashed into the wall.

Pavin Smith had to chase the ball from left field. By the time he caught up with hit, Chapman was halfway to third base and was being waved home. Smith threw to cutoff man Geraldo Perdomo in short center field, and Perdomo threw to catcher Jose Herrera for a play at the plate, but the throw was just a bit late as Chapman slid into home.

It is not uncommon for a batter to make it all the way home when there are one or more errors in the field, leading to a Little League HR. In this case, McCarthy could not be charged with an error on the play because he never touched the ball, so Chapman was credited with a home run, his 27th of the season.

Chapman got his exercise Monday night as he also hit a triple in the seventh inning, finishing 2-for-4 with a walk and 3 RBI. The Giants beat the D-backs 6-3 and continue to keep their hot streak going and have fun on their final road trip of the year.
