Miguel Vargas, Andrew Benintendi collide on popup vs. Orioles (Video)

Miguel Vargas collides with Andrew Benintendi, White Sox vs. Orioles, 9/3/2024

The Chicago White Sox season continues to yield disastrous results as third baseman Miguel Vargas collided with left fielder Andrew Benintendi while trying to catch a popup during Tuesday night's game in Baltimore.

It happened in the bottom of the second inning with the bases loaded and two outs as the Orioles were looking to extend a 4-0 lead. Orioles batter Eloy Jimenez hit a high popup to short left field near the foul line. Vargas and shortstop Jacob Amaya followed the ball from the infield while Benintendi came in from left field. As the ball came down, Amaya pulled out of the way while Vargas and Benintendi followed it until the very end.

Unfortunately, neither one of them saw the other one coming. Vargas got his glove on it but ran headfirst into Benintendi's shoulder, dropping the ball in the process. Benintendi chased the ball into foul territory as the bases emptied while Jimenez reached second on what ultimately was scored as an error for Vargas.

We have seen ugly collisions on popups in MLB action before, and this one ranks right up there. Fortunately, Vargas was able to stay in the game after the collision.

However, it has been that type of season for the White Sox, who lost the game 9-0 and are now 31-109 on the season. Amazingly, they are 39 1/2 games out of fourth place in their division, which is absolutely unheard of.
