Pete Alonso breaks bat over leg after striking out vs. Red Sox (Video)

Pete Alonso breaks bat over leg, Red Sox vs. Mets, 9/4/2024

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso broke his bat over his thigh after striking out during Wednesday night's game against Boston.

It happened in the bottom of the eighth with runners on first and second and nobody out as the Mets were trying to extend their 4-3 lead. After working a full count on Red Sox reliever Kenley Jansen, Alonso swung and missed on a 94 mph cutter.

It was the third strikeout of the game for Alonso, and he was thoroughly frustrated with himself, so he took it out on his bat. He lifted it over his head and slammed it down on his leg, snapping the handle right off. Alonso let the barrel of the bat lay on the ground while tossing the handle aside as he walked back to the dugout.

We have seen MLB players break bats over their knees before, and we have also seen other players fail miserably. Kids, don't try this at home.

Fortunately, Alonso's struggles did not rub off on the rest of the Mets lineup. The Mets were able to score four runs in the bottom of the eighth, primary due to poor pitching by the Red Sox, who walked in three Mets runs. That gave the Mets a more comfortable cushion as they went on to win the game 8-3 and complete a sweep of the Red Sox. It was the seventh consecutive win for the Mets and the fifth straight loss for the Red Sox.
