Minnesota Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson scored a rare "goalie goal" during the final moments of Tuesday night's game in St. Louis.
The Wild held a 3-1 lead and had a man advantage with Blues defenseman Philip Broberg in the penalty box for a high sticking double minor penalty. Down the stretch of the game, the Blues subbed out their goaltender for an extra skater in a desperate attempt to muster a goal.
On a faceoff just outside the Wild blue line with 17.4 seconds remaining, the Blues took control at center ice where left winger Pavel Buchnevich took a slapshot on net that Gustavsson stopped with his glove. Gustavsson put the puck down and got some height underneath it as he sent it down the other end of the ice and into the empty net.
Over the years we have seen own goals by goaltenders that accidentally knock the puck into their own net. However, "goalie goals" are especially rare and deserve to be celebrated by fans and teammates alike.
Gustavsson's goal was the final nail in the coffin as the Wild beat the Blues 4-1 to improve their record to 2-0.
