Pete Alonso trips over own bat, Mets vs. Brewers Game 2, 10/2/2024

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso tripped over his own bat while running to first during Wednesday's Game 2 of their National League Wild Card playoff series in Milwaukee.

It happened in the top of the first with one out and runners on first and third as the Mets were looking to increase their 1-0 lead. On the 1-2 pitch, Alonso hit a grounder to short. Brewers shortstop Willy Adames made a diving stop and made a backhand toss to Brice Turang, who stepped on second base and threw to first baseman Rhys Hoskins to complete the double play and end the rally for the Mets.

What was not obvious at first glance, however, was why Alonso only made it halfway to first base on the grounder when he arguably could have had a decent chance of being safe at first to keep the rally going. However, the replay showed that after hitting the ball, Alonso dropped his bat and stepped on it as he began running down the first base line. The trip caused him to fall to the ground, leaving him virtually no chance to reach first base safely.

This is certainly not the first time we have seen an MLB player fall down running to first base, and it probably won't be the last. Still, given the amount of money these players make, you don't expect this to happen.

Alonso went 1-for-4 with a strikeout as the Mets lost to the Brewers 5-3. The series is now tied at 1 game apiece, with the deciding Game 3 on Thursday.
