Arizona State Sun Devils sophomore defensive lineman Blazen Lono-Wong made a 32-yard reception on a fake punt during Wednesday's College Football Playoff quarterfinal against Texas at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
It happened with 2:07 remaining in the second quarter as Arizona State lined up to punt on 4th and 9 from their own 21-yard line with Texas leading 17-3. The ball was snapped to freshman punter Kanyon Floyd, with Lono-Wong lined up as one of three backs behind the line of scrimmage to protect Floyd.
Instead of kicking the ball, Floyd scrambled to his right, looking for someone to throw to. As the Texas defense began to chase Floyd, Lono-Wong snuck out of the backfield and ran up the field. Floyd tossed the ball to a wide-open Lono-Wong, who caught it at the 30 and ran all the way to the Texas 47-yard line for a 32 yard gain.
One of the most things to see in football is watching a big man run with the ball. On this play, Lono-Wong proved himself to be a pretty solid athlete with good hands and decent speed.
Unfortunately, the Sun Devils were unfortuantely unable to capitalize after keeping their drive alive as they had a field goal attempt blocked to end the half. As for Lono-Wong, however, his catch was good enough to lead the Sun Devils in receiving for the first half of play. Now that's making the most of an opportunity.
