Corey Perry assisted by nachos on goal vs. Capitals (Video)

Ice crew cleans up nachos, Capitals vs. Oilers, 1/21/2025
Edmonton Oilers right winger Corey Perry scored a goal during Tuesday night's game against Washington with a little help from a plate of nachos on the ice.

That's right. Nachos.

It happened at the 4:50 mark of the third period, about a minute after the Capitals had scored a goal to extend their lead to 3-1. While Oilers center Leon Draisaitl took control of the puck along the boards and skated to the Capitals end of the ice, where a fan had just thrown a tray of nachos onto the ice. Draisaitl passed the puck to Perry, who had positioned himself a few feet from the nachos, and Perry scored with a slapshot to cut the Caps lead to 3-2.

Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson immediately complained to the officials, pointing to the nachos and arguing that play should have been stopped, but was unsuccessful in his campaign to reverse the goal.

Draisaitl was credited with the assist on Perry's goal, but it would seem the fan who threw the nachos on the ice could get credit for an assist as well. Hopefully, security tracked down the fan and escorted them from the building.

Before play resumed, the ice crew was given the task of cleaning up the ice. Most of the nachos were still in the tray, and the crumbs that spilled onto the ice were swept up. Fortunately there was no cheese in the tray, as that spill would have been messy to clean up.

We have seen food on the field at pro sporting events before, but usually it involves an accidental spill. Of course, there was also that bizarre incident with the Uber driver who strolled onto the court to deliver McDonalds at a college basketball game.

In the end, the Capitals held on for the 3-2 victory. The Capitals currently have the best record in the NHL with 69 points.
