Oilers-Red Wings game interrupted by octopus thrown on ice (Video)

Octopus on ice, Red Wings vs. Oilers, 1/30/2025

Thursday night's NHL game between the Edmonton Oilers and visiting Detroit Red Wings was briefly interrupted when an octopus landed on the ice.

It happened 18 seconds into the third period with the game tied at 2-2. Play was stopped as the puck flew into the crowd when the octopus was apparently thrown onto the ice by one of the fans.

Al the Octopus is the mascot of the Red Wings, so this may have been a nod to Detroit. However, this was a road game for the Red Wings, and Edmonton is nearly 2000 miles from Detroit, so to see an octopus on this ice was a bit unexpected.

The ice crew at Rogers Place quickly scooped up the octopus and play resumed. However, there seems to be a pattern emerging in Edmonton, as just last week a fan threw their nachos onto the ice. They may need to increase security in the arena, or may need to consider putting up nets to surround the entire ice instead of just behind the nets.

The game remained tied at 2-2 through regulation and overtime. The Red Wings went on to win in a shootout.
