Fran McCaffery ejected for criticizing officials vs. Illinois (Video)

Fran McCaffery angry with officials, Iowa vs. Illinois, 3/13/2025

Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery was ejected from Thursday's second round game of the Big Ten Tournament against Illinois for criticizing and cursing at game officials.

It happened with 13:33 remaining in the second half as Illinois led 69-60. Iowa was setting up their offense when McCaffery had something to say to the official standing closest to him on the court. It is unclear what he said, but what is clear is that the official did not care for it, as he T'd him up. We can only speculate that he may have been upset that Iowa had been called for 5 fouls in the half up until that point compared to one foul for Illinois.

The assistant coaches came over to calm McCaffery down and keep him separated from the officials. Unfortunately, McCaffery was still unhappy and proceeded to yell "F***ing B***S***", which led to his second technical and ejection from the game.

McCaffery has a history of temper tantrums and ejections. All things considered, this outburst was somewhat mild compared to those in his past.

Iowa was unable to rally as Illinois came away with the 106-94 victory. Iowa is now 17-17 and unlikely to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament, but they have a chance to get invited to the NIT.
