Anthony Edwards earns 18th tech, likely suspension for berating official (Video)

Anthony Edwards called for 18th tech, Nets vs. Timberwolves, 4/11/2025

Minnesota Timberwolves superstar shooting guard Anthony Edwards received his 18th technical foul of the season for berating an official during Friday night's game against Brooklyn, which means he will likely be suspended for Sunday's season finale against Utah.

It happened with 6:29 remaining in the second quarter with the T-Wolves holding a 45-34 lead. Edwards was defending Nets guard Keon Edwards on the dribble when some contact was made and "Ant-Man" was called for the foul. Edwards went apoplectic and screamed to the official (according to his postgame comments) "Where was the f***ing foul?"

The official T'd him up immediately, and unless the technical is rescinded by the league, Edwards will have to sit out Sunday's game against the Jazz. According to NBA rules, players receive an automatic 1-game suspension upon accumulating 16 technical fouls in a season and another 1-game suspension for every 2 additional technical fouls above that. Ironically, his earlier 1-game suspension for his 16th technical foul was served against Utah on February 28, a game which the T-Wolves lost 117-116.

Sunday's game will be critical for the T-Wolves in determining their playoff position. They have a chance to finish as high as 4th place, but as of now, they could be forced into the Western Conference Play-In tournament and the possibility of an early exit. Edwards is the star of this team and has a massive presence on the court. He has to know how important he is to the team's success and how arguing with the officials is a losing proposition. There was no reason to get all wrapped up in emotion during a game where the T-Wolves were likely to win easily when you have critical games coming up, especially the one on Sunday. Bottom line: Edwards has to be smarter than this.

As for the rest of the game, Edwards finished with only 9 points in 31 minutes of action, but the T-Wolves blew out the Nets 117-91.

UPDATE: The NBA has rescinded the technical foul on Edwards, so he will be available to play Sunday against Utah.
