In IIHF Women's World Championship hockey action, a wild moment occurred during Thursday's quarterfinal matchup between USA and Germany when USA defender Caroline Harvey lost her phone on the ice after apparently falling out of her back pocket.
It happened as Harvey tried to check Germany forward Luisa Welcke into the boards but missed. Harvey fell to the ice after colliding with the boards, and after she got up and skated away, the phone could be seen on the ice behind her.
Crazy moment from USA vs. Germany as Caroline Harvey's phone appeared to hit the ice. 📱😂#WomensWorlds pic.twitter.com/3jYhHv5DKK

Play was stopped as an official picked up the phone. It was first handed it to one of the German coaches, who checked with her players to see if anyone dropped their phone. Not sure how long it took to get the phone back to Harvey, as any player would likely be embarrassed to fess up to playing on the ice with a phone inside their uniform. Seems silly as the phone can easily get damaged, and they are very expensive. And why would she have her phone in her pocket during the game? Was she expecting an important phone call?
We would guess the coaches will have to implement a rule to enforce common sense: NO PHONES ON THE ICE.
As surprising as this was, this is not the first time we have seen an athlete drop their phone in the middle of a sporting event. Back in 2015, super middleweight boxer Marvin "Papi Gallo" Jones dropped their phone in the middle of a fight. That was a more awkward situation, as it was obvious whose phone it was given there were only two fighters in the ring, so the boxer closer to the phone was obviously the one who had it in their back pocket.
In the end, USA won the game 3-0 to advance to the semifinals, where they will face Czeckoslovakia.
