Cincinnati Reds left fielder Gavin Lux lost a fly ball in the sun which allowed a run to score during Monday's game against St. Louis.
It happened in the top of the first inning with a runner on third and two outs with the game scoreless. Cardinals batter Nolan Arenado hit a fly ball to deep left field. Lux lost track of the ball as soon as it was hit, putting his arms out to indicate that he had no idea where the ball was. The ball went over his head and bounced off the bottom of the wall.
Lars Nootbaar scored from third easily to give the Cards a 1-0 lead. Arenado reached second and was credited with a double.
We have seen MLB outfielders lose fly balls in the sun before, although some outfielders are able to catch the ball anyway despite not seeing it. In this case, Lux did the best he could under the circumstances. We have seen worse plays in the outfield recently, with some of those players having no issues seeing the ball.
Lux made up for his fielding mishap by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI, helping the Reds beat the Cards 3-1. It was the fifth straight win for the Reds and second straight loss for the Cards.
